On the exhibition “Rome in Westphalia 2.0”
Around the birth of Christ Roman legions tried to extend the Roman empire to the east of the Rhine. They set up mighty military bastions along the Lippe. One was at Haltern am See. But bitter resistance from Germanic tribes forced the Roman troops back to the Rhine in 16 AD; the river then formed the border of the Roman empire for hundreds of years. In a number of respects the exhibition “Rome in Westphalia 2.0” in the LWL Roman Museum is an update: brand-new finds such as a legionarys dagger with belt and two Roman helmets from Haltern are to be seen for the very first time. A new “Roman guardhouse” is being built on the Roman building site Aliso.
